La New Yorkaise
by Sarah Geledi
When I found out Bruce Springsteen was playing an ”intimate” gig at the historic Apollo Theater in NYC in march of 2012, I knew I had to do everything in my power to be there.
My husband JF (from Beatnick) and his filmmaking partner Louka were planning on shooting a short student film in New York for the Grasset Institute and wrote a storyline inspired by my fascination with Bruce and the upcoming show.We shot the entire film in 3 days and used beautiful Manhattan and Brooklyn as our settings.
JF invited his friend Peter Hale (Allen Ginsberg‘s former assistant and keeper of his estate) to make a cameo appearance in our film offering me a copy of HOWL at the lovely Cowgirl restaurant in Greenwich Village.
There are no Bruce or E Street Band cameos, but we did film in front of the Apollo on the night of the show (an hour and a half before showtime!) I unfortunately did not make it inside (it was nearly impossible without a VIP ticket), but I still had a fabulous time shooting this film.
This is our cinematic love letter to Bruce and New York City, wrapped up in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, an homage to Woody Allen. Hope you enjoy watching as much as we did making it.
